Ours is an alternative high school for students who are behind in credits and at risk of not graduating. Our staff provides the necessary support and guidance to help students emotionally and academically instead of dropping out of school. Many students have suffered trauma during their childhood. Often times underlying anxiety, tension, or depression interferes with the student's ability to focus on academics. During these times, they come to my counseling office to get help with coping skills, emotional support and guidance in working through anxiety attacks.
Research shows the motion of rocking has calming effects for anxiety, stress, PTSD and even pain. It can help settle the body into a natural rhythm that synchronizes the brain, leading to soothing and calming feelings. Rocking chairs would make counseling sessions even more beneficial as much of my day is devoted to counseling trauma survivors. Having soothing and calming chairs that rock will help students' emotional wellness so that they can successfully focus better on their academics and eventually earn their diplomas. I would love to be able to give all students a peaceful environment to have conversations with me in my office.
