My ESL (English as a second language) students do not always have the necessary school supplies. Most, if not all of my students are low income and some of my older students have a difficult time getting what they need due to lack of support at home. A few nights ago one of my students called me to ask if I had a composition notebook I could bring to school the next day because she was home alone and her brother (guardian) would not be home until after 11pm. It broke my heart that she didn't save someone at home to take her to the store.
During the COVID-19 pandemic I learned that some of my students do not have thermometers at home to take their temperature to ensure they are safe to go to school. I also suspect that many of them do not have more than one face mask and I wonder if they are washing it at night as they should. I want to help keep them safe, healthy, and set them up for academic success. These kids really benefit from extra support from the adults in their lives!
