To help my students learn amidst the pandemic, I could really use a rolling whiteboard and some Magna-Tiles. I would like to have a rolling whiteboard to enable my students to take math to various locations. This would enable me to take the students outside, to the cafeteria, or to the gym in order to participate in engaging math tasks. This tool would also allow my students to spread out in light of COVID-19. As I have done some research this past year, I have discovered the importance of providing students with a space where they can easily erase items and where they can stand up and do their work simultaneously. One of the key things that stood out to me in this research is that 鈥淲hen students work on whiteboards, they can quickly erase any errors, which, for them reduces the risk of trying something鈥 (Peter Liljedahl, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics). Similarly, this research also indicates that 鈥渟tanding necessitates a better posture, which has been linked to improvements in mood and increased energy鈥 (Peter Liljedahl, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics). This could ultimately lead to better engagement with the math tasks at hand.
To make an upcoming unit more interesting my students would really love some Magna Tiles. I believe that this could be a useful tool in allowing the students to discover the concept of surface area and volume. By providing students with a hands-on activity they are more likely to engage with the material and also to remember the information for longer periods of time. I would like to give my students the opportunity to use these to develop formulas for surface area and volume from prior knowledge of the area of two-dimensional shapes.
