My student body is 100 percent African American. I strive to enlighten them as much as possible about their (our) history and the social injustices that have been perpetuated on African Americans throughout history. This book will provide a wonderful opportunity for all of my students. In collaboration with other teachers within my school, we would like to do a school-wide literacy project specifically using the book Just Mercy. Because a majority of my students are special needs, I am ordering a middle school level of books to meet the needs of my special education students and a higher level for my students on grade level.
Each student will be given his or her own copy of the text to participate in class discussions, analyze current events, and discuss the actions they can take fight against social injustice. We hope to focus on this book the entire month of February.
