The guitar located in my office 24/7 will allow students to receive music therapy not often found in school counseling programs. My students cannot afford a musical instrument, and we are currently using an older and very worn out guitar that has been on loan to us. Students will benefit from the guitar by using it to manage their stress, enhance their memory, improve their communication and motor skills, and to help them feel more able to cope with life. Students playing and picking at the guitar with even little to no experience will put them in a state of mind where they are ready and able to deal with almost anything in a post-pandemic school setting. Students will continue to benefit from a guitar as it will assist in reducing anxiety, reduce disruptive behavior as an incentive for students with behavior intervention plans and allow them to work through emotions on a guitar. Students will benefit by by creating feelings of accomplishment by having an opportunity to perform in the community and even provide music therapy to younger children in their community. Anger/Stress Management Lesson for Little to No Guitar Experience: Tune the guitar to an open tuning (Open D, Open E, Open A) A full chord and scale can be played by plucking individual strings or strumming the guitar without formation of chords. Student may strike guitar using a soft mallet, pick, or hand for different kinds of sounds, alternative to strumming or plucking, allows for movement of guitar and greater ranges of motion. The physical component of this exercise is an emotional catharsis or release of bottled-up anger, frustration, and stress. The musical component of this exercise will help students receive a scope for self-realization and introspection.
