Students who are physically active are better able to concentrate and engage in their lessons in the classrooms! To maintain the social distancing guidelines in our classrooms, all of the first grade teachers rely heavily on technology to teach our students and have them practice the skills that they are learning. Therefore they often sit at their desks for much of the day. Also to maintain our small class sizes we have a blended rotation schedule at our school where students attend school 2 - 3 times per week. Due to this schedule and the need for students to learn the core academic subjects within this time frame, PE classes are no longer held at our school. In addition we don't have PE equipment to use at recess but only have movement stations.
But our first graders still deserve the time and equipment needed to stay healthy and physically active! There are many physical education lessons we want to teach our students at recess. Some of them are how to dribble and shoot a ball, how to dribble and kick a ball, how to jump and hop while playing hopscotch with a beanbag, and how to aim and throw at a target using a beanbag. Learning these physical skills will improve our first graders' coordination, mental well being, and overall physical fitness. Even in a pandemic and maybe even more so in this time, it is imperative that we educate the whole child and not just the academic side of our students. And as a result of promoting their physical well being at recess, we will see our First graders become better focused and more actively engaged students in our classrooms. Thank You for any help you can offer!
