Since the closure of school in the spring, accessing physical books has become difficult for students. They are no longer able to take a walk down the hallway to the library, to get their hands on a book. Many students are listening to read alouds or reading books through a digital format. Students are missing the feeling of holding a book in their hands and the feel of turning a page underneath their fingertips. My students come from a lower socioeconomic status and therefore, have less resources and opportunities to access books.
The books that I have chosen contain meaningful messages of diversity and inclusion, that can apply to all my students. Not only will students be able to practice their reading skills at home, but will learn important life lessons, as well.
