My students already love reading, and I know that these books will draw them in and strengthen the relationships in our classroom! Coming back as a whole class for the first time since the year started has added a whole new element to our year and class, so I decided it might be time to take it back to the basics. Though resilient, my second graders have been craving constancy in this chaotic time, and they need some crucial skills to help them regulate their emotions.
These books have been carefully chosen to build some foundational character skills within my students. Read alouds are focused on important skills for my students, such as empowerment, growth mindset, friendship, kindness, and empathy.
We've been learning what it means to be a good citizen, and these read alouds focus on many of the characteristics we identified in the good citizens we studied. With these books I will be teaching some character-building lessons, leading discussions, introducing writing prompts and introducing art projects to accompany the stories.
