The school I work in is in Washington Heights and 91.9% of the student population is Hispanic, 6.1% African American, .9% two or more races...etc. Representation in children's books is imperative. It helps kids relate to literature and feel comfortable in their own situations, their own skin, and their own environment. Our school is following a blended learning model and no matter how instruction is being implemented, read-alouds are always everyone's favorite part of the day. These books can help us understand what it is that we feel, come to terms with change, learn how to cope with change, and reinforce acceptance and strength in diversity. Books help spark conversation and help kids reflect on the messages portrayed in them. In today's climate, it is so important we have continuous conversations to practice self-love no matter the color of your skin, and teach kids to accept those different than ourselves.
