Students will delve into a novel study of Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. This is a text that excellently showcases how an author has a unique voice and perspective is marked in her work. In this unit, students will examine various aspects of author's voice include length of sentences, word choice, dialect, and more.
Students need to see and appreciate diverse cultures. As an Asian American teacher, I want to showcase to my students how a text that represents my heritage. This will empower them to explore texts that connect to their own backgrounds. I have chosen Joy Luck Club for this unit not only because I believe it is beautifully written, diverse, and contemporary, but also because it highlights the Asian American culture through a multi-faceted lens. It allows the students to see a different culture and yet it stops them from defining that culture as one thing.
Obtaining books this year has been extremely difficult. The book room in the school contains no contemporary books. I firmly believe that students need to read modern books in order to connect to their texts and to enjoy reading. Many teachers in the school purchase their own texts for the students, yet I am not at a financial place that I can do that. I have also been advised to ask the students to purchase their own books. However, I do not want to place financial pressure on any student. Therefore, I humbly ask for any help you can give to help expose my students to beautiful writing!
