Students feel comfortable in school because it is familiar. However, the start of this school year is full of uncertainty. We closed school abruptly in mid-March, and we haven't seen each other for direct instruction since then. Students are coming back to us this school year with so much uncertainty, anxiety, and unknowns. They will be wearing masks, doing most of their work on a computer in one room, and will not have much social time.
So while they are in school, let's try to make the most of it, by getting them outside and playing outdoor recreation games! My students will be required to wear masks while participating inside and outside during Physical Education class. This means they cannot participate in any cardiovascular endurance exercise due to the masks, which also changes my entire curriculum and lesson planning. So how can I get my students moving safely? By participating in low endurance games like kan jam, bocce, ladder ball, yard yatzee, croquet, and spike ball! My lesson focus is based on student success through their strategic gameplay and enjoyment of the above mentioned outdoor recreation games. The students will participate in outdoor yard games (kan jam, bocce, ladder game ball, yard yatzee, croquet) on a rotating basis during my outdoor games unit. They will have the opportunity to participate in each game throughout the unit. Individual game strategy and skill will be taught to them at the beginning of each lesson, then they will have time to apply my instruction to the game so I can provide feedback. My overall goal for the outdoor games unit is for my students to safely and effectively utilitize the strategy I teach them to become successful at each yard game.
