Mental health issues were already an issue on high school campuses and the pandemic and need for virtual learning have exacerbated those needs. Since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, we have seen an increase in the social, emotional and mental health needs of our students.
Some students will need extra support to manage, regulate and cope with new and developing emotions. School personnel are often the first notice and identify changes to student behavior. Teacher-student relationships are often supportive and provide confidence about things that are uncomfortable or bothersome to teens. Teachers and counselors provide school social workers with the students that need the most support surrounding their mental health.
The school social worker will offer group therapy sessions for students focusing on better managing stress and helping them develop positive coping skills to move them from surviving to thriving.
The groups will be held virtually until we are able to return to in person schooling and will utilize the activities in their workbook to guide lessons and to support in their emotional growth and development.
