My classroom is a culturally responsive space. The student population is comprised of mainly Blacks and Latino, and a small number of Asians and South Americans. These students take pride in their cultural backgrounds and we endeavor to connect the learning experiences to the various cultures as far as possible.
This is an ELA classroom where we seek to build the required skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. I also teach AP African American Studies to the seniors who select this course. We are constantly exploring non-fiction (informational texts) as well as realistic fiction (literary texts), characteristic of specific time periods and cultures. Students often collaborate in the completion of assigned tasks and participate in whole group discussions like Socratic seminars.
My ultimate aim is to develop competence in 21st century skills primarily, critical thinking and information literacy.
