After the incredibly challenging and traumatic past year and a half, my goal for this year is to make sure that above all, my students feel safe, welcomed, and that they are a valuable part of our classroom! I have focused on creating a therapeutic classroom environment that will inspire them to form connections with each other as they learn and grow. As a new teacher, however, I have a very small classroom library, and even fewer books that reflect the many different cultures and languages that we see in our classroom. Many students speak Hawaiian at home, or Marshallese, or Chuukese, or Tagalog! To make them feel as comforted and safe as possible - and to encourage everyone in our class to learn, respect, and value other cultures and traditions - I would like to create a library that reflects their stories and includes books in languages they speak at home! These students will even be able to bring these books home to share with their families, which I hope will inspire an even greater love for reading and learning! Please help me show my students how loved and seen they are through the representation they will find in these stories.
