In my U.S. History class, it is a struggle to make history inclusive and representative of the rich diversity that is sitting in my room. My classes speak almost 20 different languages. These kids are smart, resilient, brave, adaptable, and kind. they come to school everyday and give it their all despite the many obstacles in front of them.
My goal is to help my students connect with history by making it accessible and representative of themselves. To do this I want to provide my students with United States History books in Spanish as well as books in English at lower reading levels.
For free reading time, I want to create an inclusive class library that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the United States and the contributions and experiences of minority groups. Representation matters! Youth need to see themselves in a positive way and have access to the experiences of other people. Providing them with this experience will help them become engaged citizens in our community and make the world a better place.
