Our school is an application school in a lower-income area. While a four-function calculator might not be a huge expense to some, it could make a huge impact in my classroom. Allowing students to recognize and use available tools will allow them to see math as something they can conquer. By having calculators available and accessible to the students I can give them the option to use them when needed, this will also allow for a level of self-autonomy.
By giving the students the option to use the calculator or not, I am hoping to show them that they can use the tools in their lives to help them when needed.
