Teaching in 2020 brings some unique challenges to the music classroom. From COVID-19 considerations, to remote teaching, to social-emotional struggles, (atop being a first-year-teacher!) the obstacles are extensive. Nonetheless, music plays a pivotal role in every student's education.
Each of the items in this project will prepare my in-person and remote students to be both musical and considerate, despite the unique challenges of schooling in 2020-2021.
In the music classroom, children's books can be transformed into songs or chants, demonstrate steady beat, or teach students about different musical styles. Each of the books I selected can be used to teach a specific musical concept while also representing and celebrating a variety of cultures. With such a divisive political landscape, reading and engaging in culturally diverse literature is just one way to bridge the gaps between different people, preparing our students to be respectful of all, regardless of our backgrounds. Plus, there's the added bonus of working on literacy skills across multiple disciplines!
Boomwhackers are excellent easy-to-clean instruments for learning note names. Pairing these color-coded tubes with play-along videos helps students feel successful making music right away and boosts skills in notation reading.
Finally, the Teachers-Pay-Teachers gift card will be used to help better connect with remote and in-person learners. Since I travel from room to room AND send out on-line lessons, virtual resources are extremely helpful for teaching the most fun and exciting lessons to all students.
