As we rapidly approach uncharted territory in education, it is essential that we try to make the learning environment as inviting and engaging as possible for our smallest learners returning to school this Fall. As a Kindergarten teacher, I want my kids to be able to socially distance without feeling socially distant within our classroom community.
Providing my learners with yoga mats, clipboards and supply bins will enable us to create a flexible and functional, age appropriate, socially distanced classroom. The yoga mats will serve as each learners personal spot; their space for individual learning and whole group instruction. Whether they choose to sit up or lay down, they will have a comfortable and FUN place to learn from. Everything they will need will be with them on their yoga mats, clipboards and supply bin full of materials, making for easier transitions and visual cues for personal space. The yoga mats will also create a low profile landscape in our classroom (all but a few small tables will be removed), making it easier for our learners to see the smart-board from a distance. I will be able to teach all Workshops and lessons on smart-board while they work from their yoga mat.
An additional advantage to the yoga mats is that we will get to do daily yoga and meditation sessions to focus on our social-emotional and gross-motor needs. I'm smiling for ear to ear just visualizing this classroom... it's the classroom where I want my kids to learn:)
