A basic hardcover, mixed media sketchbook starts at around $5. If I wanted to purchase new sketchbooks for all of my students, it would cost over $2,000 (including shipping and fees) which exceeds my art budget and wouldn't allow for any additional materials. With the materials purchased for this project, I will be able to build each sketchbook by hand for less. Students will also be able to customize the cover by drawing on the front of the folder.
Students will have a sense of pride and ownership in their artwork if they have a place that is their own to collect it. A majority of my students come from poverty or have experienced traumatic events, so consistency and structure can be essential to their success in schools. Having a routine for everything, including collecting their sketchbooks at the start of art class will reduce the stress of the unknown and help keep them on track emotionally. Additionally, sketchbooks will help keep everyone safe during the pandemic and they fulfill the safety requirements. Students and teachers (both myself and the classroom teacher) will have less material management as the sketchbooks can stay in the classroom and only ned to be touched by the student. Finally, in the event of a sudden closure due to the pandemic, students can easily take their sketchbooks home to continue making art remotely.
