My students really enjoy learning about social justice. Just Mercy provides a look into court justice cases for many Black people in America, however, unlike To Kill a Mockingbird, there is no white savior to contend with. It is my goal to not only lift up marginalized voices in my classroom through students’ own work, but also demonstrate professional voices through which my students can learn about themselves and the world around them. With the Black Lives Matter movement, it is essential that my rural Nebraska students begin to see a more expansive world than what they see in our home town, can hopefully become more empathetic to the situations of others, and recognize the similarities that we all have as human beings.
