My students need direct instruction to develop critical social emotional skills. Embedding these skills into their repertoire is absolutely essential. Each week I introduce a new skill to my students, pulling from the core social emotional learning competencies: self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. We hyper-focus on the skill for the entire week, during which they complete a variety of activities including creating videos, identifying the skill in literature, and identifying the skill in the real world.
Through the use of read aloud texts focusing on social emotional skill topics, my students are able to identify the social emotional skill present in the text, either through the theme of the text or the actions of the characters. For my students, this is a critical step in the acquisition of the skill because they are able to identify and see the skill being used by others. These materials will help my students acquire the necessary skills to become successful in their lives. Unfortunately, my students do not have access to these texts in any other capacity, including our school and local library and through digital e-book subscriptions. Now more than ever, these are especially important this year; due to the circumstances of COVID-19 and distancing, my students have missed out on over 5 months of being able to practice and apply these critical skills in person. Having these texts on hand helps to supplement my classroom library and allows me to share the texts with my students, in person or virtually.
