The students in my school come from very diverse backgrounds. As a middle school teacher, I try to get books into the hands of all of my students. My reluctant readers are always the most difficult to reach. They think they are poor readers which shows up as they hate to read so it is difficult to find a book for them in my classroom library.
Most of my classroom library includes books that were mine when I was in middle school or titles that were purchased in bulk many years ago. Students do not want to read these books. I am in need of current titles but I am also in need of books written by authors with diverse backgrounds.
With the current issues around the United States right now, I want to show my students that I am aware of their cultural differences. I also want to show students that I embrace the differences by having books that they can relate to their own lives.
