We need big books so our students can have shared reading experiences with an adult. Our school houses (5) three year old classrooms and all our students come from poverty. Many are not even familiar with how to hold a book when they enter school. Big Books enable students to engage in fundamental early levels of reading including print awareness, letter recognition, phonemic awareness and rhyming. Big Books help build relationships! The visual appeal of Big Books is a sure hook for students. Large print and colorful illustrations allow the whole classroom to share meaningful experiences with a story. Big Books enrich oral language through modeled reading. Students can then mimic the teacher's behavior and begin to develop critical early learning skills. Our students, with this project, would be able to begin the reading process by having strong literature at school that they do not have at home.
