In my classroom, the only quiet time all day is when I open a book. My students are entranced with the information found through the pictures and text and are eager to become readers. In our school, most of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. A growing number of students are homeless, and before they enter kindergarten many have never owned their own book. In addition to the challenges they face related to poverty, 25% of my class are English Language Learners. These students do not come from a background of rich experiences, and work hard to learn the skills necessary to become a reader.
