Many students develop math anxiety. A gap in math instruction can negatively impact future math confidence which can increase that math anxiety and reduce learning potential into adulthood. We want to make a change in our math students' confidence while learning from home. We've identified 90 rising second, third and fourth graders that are committed to our Remote Summer School program.
The Math Manipulative Toolboxes contain maneuverable objects that make learning math more enjoyable and engaging. They will motivate students to figure out a problem by creating a hands-on physical model of an abstract math idea. Manipulatives are a powerful addition to math instruction, and can further be used to facilitate math discussion with the teacher and peers. The toolbox itself teaches the student organization and a sense of responsibility.
Word problems are notoriously challenging, and integrating problem-solving practice with a Bingo game sweetens the task. Divvying Bingo cards up before summer school starts will allow for a virtual Bingo games, with students solving problems as they play remotely.
