In 2nd grade, building reading stamina takes time. Many of my students aren't reading independently without some frustration. They think it's a task at times, and haven't found that LOVE of reading yet. There are many books they would like to read, and even more they've never been exposed to that I'd like to introduce to them with a listening center.
A listening center, during my daily reading rotations, is the perfect time to expose them to a variety of genres. Each group of students would spend 2-3 days a week, sitting comfortably in special seating, while they listen to preselected stories that I either (already) own, correlate with our Social Studies/Science unit of the month, or are pulled from a wide variety of online libraries.
