COVID-19 affected everyone as it spread in 2020, this was unfortunately an additional set back to many ELL students in my class. Not only were they having to navigate socializing and learning in a different language, but they were also having to try and learn through a screen. As 2020 and 2021 came and left, students had to readjust multiple times.
Students went from socializing every day, and expanding both their social and academic language, to being isolated from their normal academic routines.
As my students have come back to school full-time they are finding it hard to readjust to a classroom environment. They are working full-speed at trying to convert the classroom language from Spanish to English but they are also using up their energy by just sitting in their desk trying to focus. If you can help my class receive the flexible seating it will improve oxygen flow to the brain, which will help students minds be alert and focused.
It is also very important for ELL learners to have access to STEM and sensory materials to help them be more engaged by learning hands-on in the classroom. After going years without being in a classroom environment, students need help to be able to use their energy towards learning.
