Choice and comfortably is really important. As a first year teacher their are many things you learn throughout the year. One thing I noticed was when my student had an option to sit in their chair or the carpet they were more engaged because they had a sense of ownership over their learning. They found that space where they felt comfortable and ready to learn. This made me invest from my own pocket to purchase one wobble chair, a medicine ball and pillows to sit on. They were so excited to have these new classroom options.
The disappointing thing about doing that was seeing how limited we were on the the seating options. More than one student needed the wobble chair or medicine ball. I saw students who had a hard time focusing were focusing longer. Student who have behavior needs strived with a seating choice. We started taking turns but it wasn't enough. We needed for more seating options.
In second grade the students have wiggly bodies that need to move. I want to grow that choice and comfortably by adding a few more seating options.
