More than three鈥憅uarters of students from low鈥慽ncome households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education.
The way it works is students are treated as employees: they begin each day timing in and end each day timing out; they write their daily learning target and success criteria; and they complete their daily tasks. At the end of the week I look at time-sheets, agendas and assignments to determine the amount of pay they will receive on payday. On payday each student initials the payroll sheet after receiving their payment.
Fun fact: Many kids do not count their pay until it鈥檚 brought to their attention that their initial means they were paid correctly. Wait. Did I forget to tell you many kids don鈥檛 know what their initials are? As I said, I teach middle school, standing before me is a kid that physically looks like a high schooler and thinks like an elementary school student.
After each student is paid I open my class store. In the store, students can buy a small reward or a large reward. The small treat costs $7.00 and is usually purchased by a student who has not completed all their assignments; while the large treat costs $12.00 and is usually purchased by students who have completed all their assignments for the week.
The purpose of payday is to teach students work skills now, the intent is for students to be successful in the real world by simulating employment in my classroom. What does simulating employment look like?
Daily, students have the choice to be in class, on time, and on task. The choice they make determines how much they get paid or not get paid. I do not make exceptions for students who miss days or don鈥檛 complete assignments. They get paid what they have put in for the week.
