The students I teach are a lively and diverse bunch that love to read and discuss important topics that are going on in the world. While they are 9th graders, many of them have a reading level of 5-8th grade which makes it difficult to read and discuss many important novels that they are required to read. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that touches on many important themes and topics that deal with race, equality, and gender roles. By giving them To Kill a Mockingbird: the Graphic Novel, my students will be able to still experience the themes and important messages associated with this book in a way that is accessible to them. Without these graphic novels, my students will not be able to read this book and will miss out on many important discussions that are relevant to today's world.
