Reading is one of the most important foundational skills a child can learn. My goal is not just to teach these skills but also help my students discover the joys of reading. To do this students need access to high quality, engaging books.
With this project, I hope to improve the overall volume and quality of my classroom library to help me meet the individual needs and interests of my students. Many of the books that I have selected are series books that students have either requested in the past or I know my first graders will need this year. I have also chosen some new nonfiction books to help me begin to replace my outdated collection. The topics for these books are either of high interest to this age group or are topics that I teach in science and social studies. With both my nonfiction and fiction selections, I have tried to choose several books from well known authors to use as mentor texts in both reading and writing. They would serve as excellent models and resources for kids to refer to as we strive to hit our learning targets.
With Covid 19 being an additional obstacle this year, ensuring that my students have access to enough good books while both at school and at home will be crucial to their overall success.
