My students don't have books to read at home for pleasure. I would love to be able to buy books to mail to my kids to start their own home library. Reading is so important and my goal is to find books that interest each student.
Because children's literature does not always reflect the diversity of our country, many children do not see themselves mirrored in books. Over time, children and families continue to feel undervalued and unimportant. Not only do children need to see their reflection in books, but they also need to be able to see other cultures and worlds. They need to know they have the power to open the door and enter those worlds.
Allowing students to see themselves in books is a gift that fosters pride and belonging. All children deserve to feel valued and providing a balance of windows and mirrors in our classrooms will do that!
