Help me give my students a chance to see a world beyond their own. Sonia Sotomayor is proof that if you work hard and dream big dreams, you can make it far in life. Her autobiography touches on themes that many of my students and their families can relate to, such as single-parent households, having an illness, addiction, not fitting in, Hispanic culture, loss, etc.
Many of my students are English Language Learners, and studies show they greatly increase their language intake when a teacher reads aloud and they follow along in their own book.
I own one copy of the book and have read brief excerpts of her story to my students. They were as attentive as they could be without having a copy of their own in front of them. Please help me provide copies for all my students. After reading the book, I would ask students to do a book report or project, such as creating a visual timeline of Sotomayor's life. Or answering: What struggles did Sotomayor experience in her life and how did she overcome them?
