February is American Heart Awareness Month. In my class, we are focusing on making healthier choices for our hearts by meal planning well-balanced meals, and going more frequently to the gym. One way I want to motivate my students to be more active is to provide those who can afford one with a loaner activity tracker. They will keep track of their step progress throughout their school day and create visual graphs to track progress as they go. The graphs will open conversation about differences in days or weeks when we are more active and less active. I hope to celebrate accomplishments on the days when students visit the gym so that they are encouraged to continue working out after they graduate our program. We will have friendly step-up competitions with awards for the most steps throughout the school year, and together we will celebrate our healthy accomplishments. The Fitbit will be on a daily loan so that students can enjoy the step-up rewards for years to come.
