I use the book Number the Stars every year, but over the years, the books have taken a beating! Many are being held together with tape, as pages are falling out.
I love this book and what it teaches my 5th graders not only about history but also about empathy for others. I use it specifically to teach summarizing and figurative language. Students work in partner groups to read and summarize each chapter. We then meet together as a class to talk about the reading and to clarify any questions and make predictions about what is going to happen next.
