The items in this project will be used to build calming boxes for some of my students. My district is currently completely virtual and I have some students who are struggling immensely and has taken a major toll on their emotional well being. Think about it. When you are stressed, your body is feeling a strange combination of frozen and jittery at the same time. When kids feel emotionally triggered, they need calming activities and grounding.
This is a perfect time to have a calming box, which is a box that contains a variety of items that serve to comfort and calm students who are feeling significant anxiety.
Comfort Boxes bring several important reminders and supports for calming and strength together in one place. It鈥檚 a 鈥渙ne-stop solution鈥 so the stressed child has a place to turn with various items when strong feelings show up to help them cope. I chose journals for my older students to be able to write about how they are feeling and a "color my emotion coloring book" for my younger students. I also would like to add crayons, pencils, workbooks and positive sayings to each of the boxes. Many of my students come from low income homes so I would like to be able to provide all of these items in one box. A student having access to this box will help deal with the stressors in their life and take a brain break from their current situation and learn to cope in a positive way.
