Each morning students come in and 'work' in their journals. They can draw pictures, write letters, write their names, even just scribble if they want to. This daily practice helps develop the necessary fine-motor skills needed to write and stimulates the creative thought process. I will use the blank journals as their morning journals in addition to using them to do drawing tutorials on YouTube. My students LOVE learning how to draw a puppy or emoji ice cream, and it gives them such confidence and joy when they finish a picture. The lined journals will be used in small groups when we practice our letters together, learning how to make "stick letters" like A and X and then curvy letters like C and S. The markers will make all the amazing art and letter-writing possible.
Confidence comes with practice, practice leads to mastery, mastery of writing and drawing skills will lead to my students being strong and joyful writers and artists when they move on from Pre-kindergarten. My students will have the necessary fine motor skills, knowledge of the alphabet, and persistence that will set them up for success in Kindergarten.
