My class is made of racially, ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and socially diverse students who would benefit from seeing their own cultures through books in the classroom.
The books would help our BIPOC students build positive relationships with academics by creating connections in which they can see people like themselves represented in the school curriculum. The books would also help our non-BIPOC students with the insight and appreciation of different cultural, racial, and social backgrounds. The diverse representations will be used to foster an appreciation for the diversity that we see in our classrooms and to create a classroom community that celebrates and appreciates all that each student has to offer.
Some books on this list will be added to our Read Aloud selection in hopes to be be used to help facilitate meaningful conversations about race, gender, stereotyping, discrimination, cultural appreciation and appropriation, and many other topics on social justice.
