These books will work to enhance the informational rich natural disaster unit that I strive to create for my students. My classroom library is full of rich informational texts that compliment this unit, but seem one dimensional in the impact that natural disasters have on the people that go through them. Typically this unit is one where students learn the science behind various natural disasters and then the unit is over. My goal is for students to understand that race and social inequities are not just a topic to be covered during Black History month, but instead, need to be discussed all of the time.
With these new books, my students will be able given the opportunity to learn about social injustice from literature. This text is so much more than learning about theme, comparing/contrasting, and problem and solution. Zane and the Hurricane will allow students to ask the tough questions. This text will allow them to see the world for the harsh realities that occur in it.
It is my mission as a teacher to provide my students opportunities to be uncomfortable and learn about the real world. I want students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. Getting this book into the hands of my students will begin a discussion that I hope begins to make a big difference in their lives.
