My class needs an outlet for their energy to help them stay focused on learning. Using a variety of seating will provide this for them. Many of my students get very antsy if they sit on their chair for too long. When I say too long it could mean five minutes for some students or 15 for others. They start to shake their legs, stretch, fidget, among other things. Even if they are working with a partner or doing small group on the back table they struggle to sit in their chairs. Students are allowed to stand behind their chairs if they need to. Although this gives them some movement, it sometimes leads to distraction. My students love brain breaks where they get up to dance or exercise to a guided video. I also have a quiet corner with fidget toys if they need a break.
The use of flexible seating will tremendously enhance what I am already doing. The seven stability balls will be used in my small group instruction to help them stay focused on what we are doing. When we are not in small group centers, students will use them as needed at their desks. The eight floor Sit-Upons will be used during center time to assist students in staying in one spot during the whole time allotted for that specific center. It鈥檚 cushioned so it鈥檚 comfortable and gives them a small amount of necessary movement. The three wobbly chairs and the four bouncy bands will be used as necessary during whole group or partner work for students that feel they need it to help them stay focused to participate, listen, and learn successfully.
