Remote teaching has made my eyes open to barriers that must be overcome in order for my students to learn at home. As I reflect back on the days of face-to-face learning when homework was not attempted or returned, even from eager learners, I now have a better insight as to why.
During distance learning, some of my students have been in a reclining position because they are in close quarters and are using their bunk beds, couches, or the floor as their location for studying. Their families lack the resources to provide them with a table or smooth surface to use as a study desk. In some of their homes, there are loud distracting noises from adult relatives, babies, and neighborhood sirens, etc. And, yes, some of the noises are actually from other teachers, instructing siblings within the household over ZOOM!
Students in my classroom have attention deficits and even when face-to-face, headphones, timers, and weighted lap blankets are required to help students maintain focus.
I want to navigate my students into calmer distance learning waters by providing them lap desks, noise buffering earphones, timers, and weighted lap pads that help them stay grounded and attentive as they synchronously and asynchronously learn at home.
