Track in middle school focuses on teaching students the basics of each competition. Many students avoid participating in track because they have already counted themselves out as athletes or professionals. In our track program, we emphasize self-discovery and taking risks. Students are encouraged to try running and field events throughout middle school as they often begin to specialize in certain events in high school.
Teachers, staff, and coaches work with students on our track team in a joint effort to encourage a strong partnership. One of the coaches specializes on throwing disc and shot put, so he teaches all students the basic moves, beginning with safety. Once students can demonstrate that they understand how to be safe on the field, they begin learning the mechanics of each throwing event. A similar approach is taken to teach students how to use starting blocks in our running events, compete in long jump, use the hurdles and pass batons during our relay events.
As the season progresses, students focus on events after having tried many. Students hope to make it to the district and state track meets. At this point in the season, students develop strategies for competing, and some are strongly encouraged to participate in events that will help them realize their potential.
Student leaders arise during the season which is another learning opportunity. Students lead warm-ups, coach their peers, and help setup, take down, and transport equipment. These students will learn to care for, track, and transport the equipment requested
Lastly, having the materials listed shows students that they are cared about. Schools in our district vary greatly with regard to socioeconomics, and our students often feel less than when we compete at more affluent schools. These materials will help level the playing field.
