My students thrive on any activity that involves choice. When they have the opportunity to choose a novel that interests them, they are more likely to become personally connected with the text rather than a book they are "forced" to read. By using literature circles in my classes, students are able to choose a book from a variety of novels on the same theme and topic.
Students will explore the history of WWII and the Holocaust through research, they will identify with the story through character analysis, and they will deepen their empathy for others as they read about this terrible point in history. These novels, along with school copies of The Diary of Anne Frank, will be independently read outside of class and then explored through a variety of topics with their literature circle.
