Reading H.G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights will provide my students with a non-fiction perspective on the thematic ideas and themes that are prevalent in fictional literary works that are identified as American Literature such as Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Wilson's Fences to name a few. Our current book selection only features fictional works plus any short stories and essays I make copies of.
Friday Night Lights will provide students with historical context of how education, gender, race, the dynamic between the individual and their community and the concept of the American Dream transcend from the printed word to real life and the implications of such a shift.
