It's important for students to appreciate who they are first, and the workshops give students a working definition of identity. Students are given the chance to express themselves as unique individuals, and in-turn learn how to respect those who may have a different background or view. It's ok to be different; it's not ok to make someone feel like they are less worthy of something simply because they don't show up in the world just like we do. The workshops cover a slew of learning standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and even creative arts. It will be a fully interactive and fun opportunity for my students, and will fit perfectly into our units on self expression and tolerance. Funding this project gives students a safe space to develop these essential learning skills. As the future generation, we need to ensure that our students are welcoming and collaborative with all backgrounds and that they have the necessary tools to shut down hate and intolerance when they are faced with it.
