In this digital age, many high schools are shifting from the traditional darkroom to the digital darkroom. Our district being one. About 10 years ago, in an effort to prepare students for the current work force and also cut budget needs, we closed our darkroom and 鈥渦pgraded鈥 to digital photography. While I love the success students have with the digital approach, as an educator I worry about the loss of knowledge that is happening across our globe. The magic that some experiences in the darkroom, watching their image develop in the chemicals, cannot be matched by Photoshop. As a traditionally trained photographer, my hope is to pass a piece of the magic I experienced in high school on to my students. While our building budget does not support a functioning darkroom, my hope is to find funding in creative places to offer this experience nested as a unit in their curriculum. Understanding where photography began and how quickly it has changed will build an appreciation for the art form that I hope will inspire our students to continue to be consumers of art beyond these walls. The alternative photography movement is quickly finding its place in the art world, and my hope is that I can teach relative techniques merging digital image making with the darkroom.
