Having an graduate nursing degree is very helpful in caring for the students at our middle school. We have medically-physically challenged students with several daily medical procedures, new immigrant families with traumatic backgrounds, and we are in an economically-challenged, urban neighborhood. Mental health concerns have increased in our youth across the nation, and I witness that daily. Our students have many challenges, so I like to be their soft place to land during a bad day.
My role is to help students be healthy and ready to learn. Screening for health concerns that impact learning, assisting families to navigate our complicated health care system, collaborating with special education classrooms, and training staff in first aid and daily procedures are all my role in keeping students in the classroom.
My skill level could be greatly improved by updating my knowledge base. While I consistently follow professional journals, an in-depth class in pediatric primary care would benefit all of the students on our school so that they can focus on their education.
