My students have a wide array of disabilities and learn best when working in small groups. To support this need, we run through different centers in the classroom to keep our groups small. Because I only have 1 other adult who works with me in the classroom, there is a always a group that is working independently.
Students will be engaged in these independent center activities that enhance their skills in STEM, reading, and fine motor skills. Students often work in pairs, which is a huge boost to their social development. These activities also give my students the confidence and motivation as they begin to understand they can take charge of their learning. Here is a breakdown of the materials and how they will support student learning:
hand2mind Pattern Blocks: Enrich student understanding of shapes and support hand-eye coordination during center time.
Learning Resources Dive Into Shapes: Students will engage in this STEM activity by learning how to build structures. This will also enhance students' fine motor skills as they manipulate objects during center time.
Learning Resources Smart Snacks Number Pops: Support students to master number recognition and object counting to enrich their math skills.
Key Education Sentence Building for Kids: Because many of my students have difficulties with fine motor skills, it is helpful for them to build sentences with this center activity. It teaches them how to correctly formulate a sentence.
Learning Resources Snap and Learn Alphabet Alligators: In this center, students learn to match uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. This supports the students in being able to foster the basic, foundational skills of reading.
