This next school year, I will be working with 6th-grade students who read two or more grade levels below the 6th-grade reading level. For my reading intervention class, motivating non-readers to enjoy reading will be a major priority for me as a teacher; my classroom will consist of independent reading, guided reading, listening centers, and a computer lab to help intervene and catch kids up in reading.
Here's where you can help: I would love to create a warm and cozy space for my students to lounge with a selected novel, magazine, and the reading therapy dog who will be joining my class a few days each week. The chairs I have requested will allow the kids to sit on the floor and pet the therapy dog (a non-judgemental audience) as they read the books and magazines also provided by this project. In addition, the headphones will help students listen to self-selected novels through our district's audiobook library, and the whisper phones help students hear themselves read, which improves oral fluency. All of these requested tools will help my students achieve reading success.
Thank you for considering my project and for supporting the work of building lifelong readers and learners!
