Refugee is a fantastic book the details the experience of three different children fleeing dangerous situations to become refugees. My students deserve to have a multicultural approach in their English class, and this book would help them see that history and the current day are interrelated.
The three different perspectives can really show that becoming a refugee can happen to anyone, and it humanizes people seeking shelter in the US. Students will read the book along side their teacher to learn about different perspectives while still teaching them the important history of the Holocaust and Cuba. The teacher will then connect the history with current day by studying the last of the three perspectives, a child from Syria fleeing the constant violence around him.
